Thai Police Bust Chinese Boss Behind $74M Crypto Laundering Ring

Key Takeaways

Chinese Crypto Money Laundering Kingpin Arrested in Thailand

Thai authorities announced the arrest of a money laundering kingpin who fled China to avoid arrest and remained in the country after his visa expired.

An investigation that encompassed the actions of several Thai immigration police officials has concluded with the arrest of Wu Chaoshuai, a Chinese national who allegedly managed a transnational criminal organization that used cryptocurrency for money laundering purposes.

Chinese authorities allege Wu served as an account mule for the organization, hiring other people to open bank accounts and cryptocurrency exchanges to obscure and facilitate the movement of illicit funds. Wu managed 133 accounts and reportedly processed over $74 million in transactions.

According to the third division of the Thai Immigration police, Wu entered Thailand using a tourist visa in December 2019 and remained after its expiry, likely to avoid leaving and being detected by Immigration authorities, which could arrange his extradition to China.

To avoid being tracked by Thai authorities, Wu moved across the country, avoiding staying in just one location for an extended period. The Thai press reported that Wu moved between various residences frequently, renting houses and luxury condos in different communities. Similarly, Wu also changed his car color and used fake license plates and forged documents to throw authorities off his track.

Nonetheless, Thai police found that Wu was hiding in a luxury house in the Ramkhamhaeng area in Bangkok. At the time of his arrest, Wu’s visa had expired over three years ago.

Wu will be charged with remaining in Thailand after his visa expired, and Thai police will coordinate his extradition with Chinese authorities.

Thai authorities have strengthened their oversight of cryptocurrency movements and crimes. In June, the Department of Special Investigation dismantled a crypto mining money laundering organization that laundered over $300 million annually from online scams and gambling platforms.
